My retail career spans 50 years performing in many functions including , merchandiser, store manager, district manager, merchandise specialist, buyer and director of aftermarket. My experience is mainly in the automotive and heavy duty aftermarket. Here are some highlights.
Retail Store Manager – Automotive Division of Lucky Stores. I helped establish new stores in new markets. Setting up stores and training employees for store management. I opened & managed several successful stores and developed and taught store operations, merchandising and signage training.
Merchandise Specialist – Automotive Division of Lucky Stores. I developed a monthly “Sales & Promotions” booklet for 400 stores. This identified advertising, endcaps, signage for the upcoming month. Including pictures of endcap, parts counter and checkstand displays. Also merchandised a prototype store in the warehouse to test new product placement and develop plan-o-grams for the stores. Responsible to sign off on all new store and remodel store gondola layouts. I interacted with buyers, vendors, advertising and store management to effectively communicate the product plans.
Buyer – Automotive Division of Lucky Stores. I purchased automotive accessory items for five warehouse to be distributed to 400 stores in 13 states. I negotiated with vendors on product purchases and advertising commitments to properly promote their product. Responsible to determine accessory product mix, retail pricing, print and in-store promotions.
Note: The Automotive Division of Lucky Stores became Checker/Shucks/Kragens and then purchased by O’Riellys.
District Manager – Indy Auto Stores was an eight store chain. I refocused marketing strategies including successful in-store sales and promotions. I developed store merchandising, endcaps and print ads. I assisted in opening new stores, updated the product mix and merchandised the established stores.
Parts Manager and Director of Aftermarket – Utility Trailer Sales of Central California for 23 years. I was responsible for many areas in branch operations. I developed the advertising strategy of “Everyday Low Price” for key items in each product category. This was a pricing strategy to earn market share in various product categories. A key area of development was regular 12 page tabloids and in-store promotions for all stores.
I participated in the design and building of two modern dealership facilities with large parts retail areas and service shops. I participated in all phases of building design, construction and startup and ongoing operations.
In this position I interacted and participated with all departments including equipment sales and personnel. My experience is a well rounded understanding of branch/dealership operations.
Gruver Consulting – My current role as consultant to retail sales operations combines my past experience in all phases of store operations and sales promotions. In addition to providing experienced guidance, I produce sales materials in print and epub format.
I provide my experience to the designing of promotional materials to producing materials that accurately communicate the plan. This dual role creates efficiencies in getting the plan into action. I also convert print advertisement to shelf signs, posters and epub materials.
Additionally, I can process photographs and other images into print or web materials. I can photograph or use your pictures for products and services. This gives you a complete sales implementation package.
